MIKE KERSULA
Board of Directors
Mike's first long days on the ocean were spent on a small boat going to and from Great Duck Island south of MDI, carrying asphalt shingles through the forest between breaker-swept beaches to roof an old boathouse.
Since that time Mike has had the fortune to further his relationship with the sea off Maine through graduate studies in marine biology and marine policy at UMaine, time at Maine's Department of Marine Resources supporting and leading research work on various commercial fish stocks, especially scallops and halibut, time as a commercial fisherman for lobster, salmon, and groundfish, farming mussels, and more recently as a coastal steward for Maine Coast Heritage Trust.
Additionally, he now thinks about water quality more than ever as he has started an independent small oyster farm off the north coast of Islesboro. Mike makes his home on the Goose River in Belfast, where he and his artist wife Annika are raising their son Elliot to appreciate boats, forests, and printmaking.
