SERGEI “Mr. Sturgeon” BREUS
Board of Directors
Sergei Breus grew up in the U.S.S.R. swimming with sturgeon in the Volga River and dreaming of oceanic adventures and discovery inspired by French explorer Jacques Cousteau. After completing a degree in oceanography engineering at the University of Leningrad, he worked aboard research vessels on the Indian Ocean studying the migration patterns of tuna and other commercial fish. With a love for people and the world around him, he went on to teach geography to high school and middle school students.
After moving to the Blue Hill peninsula in 1990, Sergei used his aptitude for engineering design and construction to become a residential home builder. For the better part of 36 years he has specialized in building homes following the Passive House Standard, which focuses on designs and materials that prioritize a safe, healthy, and energy-efficient home environment.
In collaboration with his father and their shared passion for invention and all things fish, and with support from Maine Maritime Academy and grants from MTI and NOAA, they patented an original design for a turbine on the Bagaduce River that could harness the endless supply of tidal energy while still allowing fish to travel freely through.
Always willing to lend a hand in his community, he has served locally on the Blue Hill Planning board and the Edible Island board, a non-profit organization that promotes healthy food for children. When he isn’t working or helping family, friends and neighbors, Sergei spends as much time as he can exploring Maine’s coast, rivers and lakes, especially catching, cooking, and eating an abundance of beautiful and delicious fish!
